EXPRESS SUN HOOD SITE SUITABILITY - ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
EXPRESS BY HEKA HOODS
Understanding site suitability for your Express hoods: Australian Standards, wind regions, and structural integrity
Understanding these elements is crucial for the safety and long-term stability of your Window Hoods.
When looking to see if your site is suitable for our Express by Heka Hoods Range of Sun Awnings, there are a few main things to consider. The location of your site, which will determine your wind classification, and the structural member which you are fixing the hood back to. This needs to be an acceptable substructure with sufficient structural integrity.
Prior to purchase it is the customer's sole responsibility to ensure the structural integrity of the substructure for connection of the hoods, and the site-specific wind rating.
However, with a few simple site checks and by following our guidelines, you'll be able to install your Sun Hood with confidence, ensuring both a hassle-free installation and long-lasting performance.

WHAT IS A WIND CLASSIFICATION?
Wind classification is an important detail to consider when looking into the suitability of our product for your project. Wind classifications refer to site-specific parameters that place a property within a set wind class. The wind gust speed that can affect a site area.
Wind classifications are split into two classifications; cyclonic (C), and non-cyclonic (N). They are then paired with a number 1 up to 6, the higher the number, the higher the wind speeds recorded at that location.
Wind Region refers to the categorisation of the differing areas of Australia and the average wind measurements that area experiences;
Region A – Normal
Region B – Intermediate
Region C – Tropical Cyclones
Region D – Severe Tropical Cyclones
The wind class can be found on Engineering / Architectural plans, or you may be able to find out the wind class of your area from your local council.
Please note; For sites in Northern Australia and installed above 6.5m in height, we offer a range of high-wind Heka Hoods that have been engineered to AS1170.2 Region C standards (equivalent to AS4055 C1, C2).
ENGINEERING STANDARDS
Designed and manufactured in accordance with AS1170.2, Region A and B (equivalent to AS4055 – N1, N2, N3). Heka Hoods are suitable for most sites in Australia, when installed as per our installation guidelines.
Our Express by Heka Hoods range of window hoods are not available in region C or region D areas, due to the cyclonic winds these areas can experience.
INSTALLATION & FIXINGS
Our Sun Hoods will arrive on site as a powder coated product with no fixing holes pre-drilled and no fixings supplied. This is done so the hoods can be drilled in the required fixing pattern for your structural member.
Our Installation Guidelines and Fixing Specifications provide the fixing patterns and fastener type required for each of the three suitable structural members.
- Seasoned structural grade F7 pine
- Concrete/core filled masonry
- Structural steel with a minimum base metal thickness of 2.4mm G450
Installation by a qualified builder or handyman is recommended.
The installation instructions provided with the delivery do not relieve the buyer and/or installer to use their professional due care and responsibility when installing the product.
Please note; The pre-drilled holes on your window hood are used for the powder coating process and are not intended to be used for installation. Refer to the Installation Guidelines and Fixing Specifications for the correct fixing pattern for your structure and drill accordingly.
WHY IS BRICK NOT LISTED?
Bricks come in many different structural forms from solid up to 10 hole. This means that there are many different fixing scenarios depending on what type of brick the hoods are being fixed back to. We cannot provide one general fixing scenario that covers all brickwork.
If you are looking to install our Express range of Window Hoods to brick, please contact us. We would be happy to speak to you and offer assistance with your specific scenario.
